Portimão/Lagos, April 20, 2017, Day 9

Today we go to Lagos. We are spending the night there. Lagos is 20 miles east of Portimão. We will take a taxi to the train station, then the train to Lagos. We got up about 8:30am and ate a quick breakfast. Hubby had cereal, toast and coffee. I just had toast and coffee. I packed my backpack with a change of underwear and a clean shirt for the both of us. Along with toiletries, meds and of course our electronic stuff.

We went down to the front desk to see if Maria could call a taxi for us. Of course, that was not a simple process. While Hubby took our trash to the dumpster, I showed her the word for train, comboio. After more than a few minutes and also getting another residence involved in the conversation, Maria undserstood what we needed and called a taxi to take us to the train station.

It only took a few minutes for cab to arrive. Fortunately, he spoke English. During the ride, we were able to see more of proper Portimão. The area that we are in is really called Da Rocha.

The station was small. Bought our tickets with no problem. While we were waiting for the train, Hubby had to use the restroom. He said that he had problems finding it and couldn’t get anyone to understand what he was saying. I am not sure why he didn’t ask the ticket guy, he spoke English (???). Before the train arrived, we struck up a conversation with a couple from Ireland. They were very friendly. They had travelled to Lagos a couple days ago and was returning for a quick visit before the left for home.

We talked the entire ride to Lagos and when we got there, they show us where to go to get to the heart of the city. We wished them well, then we parted ways.

We can’t check until after two. It’s only 12:30, so we stopped to get something to eat. We ordered a veggie pizza. I guess we were hungrier than we thought…we ate the whole thing!

Since it was a pretty day. We decided to walk the 30 minutes about 1.5 miles. We saw some pretty sites on our way and stopped to take pictures. We only got turned around a little bit, but pretty much made it there without incident and without the aid of the GPS. We have already blown our data plan for the month…so we have to use it ONLY when absolutely needed.

Our hotel is very quaint. It looks very European. And so does our room. Hubby wanted to rest before we headed out again. But in checking the area, all of the attractions are a mile away…..while we were resting, I finally got in touch with my brother in law to offer him our condolences.

We checked at the front desk on our way out and got a couple recommendations for dinner. We ended up walking to the town center. OMG!! What an amazing place. Small, winding cobblestone streets and sidewalks. Cars and pedestrians sharing the same narrow roads. Whitewashed buildings with tiny wrought-iron balconies. I felt like I was in the middle of House Hunters International!

After a while, we decided to eat. This time we found a restaurant that had grilled sardines (so what was up with the restaurant last night??).

My food was soo good! Grilled sardines, boiled potatoes and a salad. I wished that I knew the right to eat them. I tried to filet the fish, but there was still so many tiny bones. I swallowed so many bones. But eating the potatoes helped pushed them down.

Hubby has chicken piri-piri again. He said the chicken last night was better.

We walked around a little more. I could see myself living in this neighborhood. The shops, the restaurants. The people. The ambience. Ahhhh…..Then we walked back to the hotel. We stopped and picked up a snack to eat later. But there was no coffee in our room. I checked at the front desk and all they have is tea. We sat outside on our private terrace, drank our tea, like English people and ate our pastries. Now we are watching marathon episodes of Hawaii Five-0. Not our favorite show, BUT there in English!

Book ’em, Danno!
